We collect what we need to match rooms and people, keep most of it private, and delete it on a schedule.

Who runs SmokoShare

What's public

When a room goes live, its headline, suburb, postcode, rent, availability, smoking rules, description, photos and the host's first name are shown on the site. The host's email address is never shown.

What stays private

• The waitlist. Your name, email, suburbs, budget, move date, smoking habits and note are only seen by the person who runs SmokoShare, to email you rooms that fit. Hosts never see the waitlist: they only see how many people we've emailed their room to.
• Messages. When you message a host, we email them your first name, email address and message so they can reply to you. Messages go through automatically, except ones flagged for possible drug sales or drug-purchase/payment offers, which wait for a person to read them first.
• Reports. Only we see reports, and your email if you give it.

Smoking habits, including whether you use cannabis, are personal. You choose what to tell us, we never publish waitlist details, and we don't ask about medical conditions or prescriptions.

Photos

We strip location data and other hidden details (EXIF and similar metadata) from every photo before storing it.

How long we keep things

• Messages: 90 days.
• Waitlist details: until 30 days after your move-by date, or until you delete them.
• Anything you didn't confirm by email: 7 days.
• Listings: until you delete them with your private link.
• Your email address on a report: 90 days.
• IP addresses: only a scrambled (hashed) version, used to limit spam, deleted within 2 days.

Cookies

If you arrive from a link with a source tag (such as a shared link or a flyer's QR code), a cookie remembers it for 30 days so we know which places send people here.

When you confirm your email address, a cookie remembers that this browser confirmed it, for 180 days, so your next message or sign-up from the same browser doesn't need another confirmation email. Clearing your cookies removes it.

There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

Who helps us run the site

Cloudflare hosts the site and stores its data, and Resend delivers our emails. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits to the site without cookies and without identifying you. Either company may process data outside Australia.

When a room, a waitlist sign-up, a held message or a report comes in, the person who runs SmokoShare gets a short email notification. Those notifications leave out your details, apart from your first name and anything you write in a report; the rest stays in the site's database.

Seeing, fixing or complaining about your information

Email hello@smokoshare.au to ask what we hold about you, to correct it, or to raise a privacy concern. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer, you may be able to complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Changing or deleting your details

Every email we send includes a private link to change or delete your listing or waitlist details. Lost it? We'll email it to you again. You can also email hello@smokoshare.au and we'll do it for you.
